28 DAY ESCORTED TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA

We depart on 08 October to spend a few days in Capetown prior to the start
11 October – 7 November 2014
Day 1
If travelling with the main group, depart London Heathrow to Cape Town. Flight time 12 hours.
Day 2
Arrive Cape Town where your tour escorts will greet you and you will be transferred to a central Cape Town hotel, where you will enjoy a welcome meal in the company of your fellow travellers.

Day 3
Transfer to the motorhome depot where a representative of the company will demonstrate your vehicle. An easy drive (15 miles) to the first campsite will allow you to stock up on supplies.

Day 4
Full day guided coach excursion to Cape Town including the summit of Table Mountain (weather permitting), the Castle of Good Hope, the Grootte Kerk, St Georges Cathedral and Greenmarket Square.

Day 5
Travel to Hermanus (91 miles), the whale watching capital of South Africa.

Day 6
Drive to Swellendam (89 miles) – pick up some of South Africa’s finest wines en-route.

Day 7
Head back to the coast and enjoy Tsitsikamma (229 miles), with the local wildlife including the African wild dog, the wolf and the black backed jackal at the wolf sanctuary.

Day 8
Free time to explore the Tsitsikamma area – enjoy the dolphins swimming off the coast.

Day 9
Continuing along the Garden Route we enter Addo Elephant Park (156 miles), with one of Africa’s densest elephant populations and home to the unique flightless dung beetle. The park boasts the “Big Seven” (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, southern right whale and the great white shark). Explore the park – try parking at a watering hole and having lunch while observing the local wildlife.

Day 10
Free day to enjoy Addo Elephant Park where you can continue to marvel at the animals in their natural environment.

Day 11
Early start for the drive to the Gariep Dam Nature Reserve (276 miles), home to many species including the Cape Mountain Zebra.

Day 12
Another long day as we travel to Ladybrand (231 miles) in the Caledon Valley, with its rich Paleolithic history.

Day 13
Drive to the Golden Gate National Park (108 miles). The park derives its name from the brilliant shades of gold cast by the sun on the park's sandstone cliffs, especially the imposing Brandwag rock.

Day 14
Take the short journey to the Royal Natal National Park (74 miles) which contains some of the most spectacular scenery on South Africa. Revel in the beautiful scenery of the Drakensberg Mountains. Do not miss the Amphitheatre or the Tugela Falls.

Day 15
Travel to Dundee in the heart of KwaZulu Natal (107 miles).

Day 16
Half day coach excursion with local guide who will point out the most interesting battlefields, including Rorke’s Drift.

Day 17
Travel to Eshowe (133 miles) to experience the Zulu way of life at Shakaland. You will be treated to a Zulu meal and spend the night in a beehive hut.

Day 18
Travel to Hluhluwe (115 miles), situated between Greater St Lucia Wetland Park and Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve on the banks of the Hluhluwe River.

Free day to explore the area around Hlhuhluwe.

Day 20
Enter into Swaziland and travel to the Mlilwane Wildlife Park (178 miles) home to white rhino, sabie, buffalo, hippo and crocodile.

Day 21
Travel back into South Africa and Skukuza (138 miles) in the Kruger National Park. Look out for the big game on the way.

Day 22
Free day to explore Kruger – be back at the camp in time for the evening safari with local guides.

Day 23
Head north through the park to Satara (58 miles) – try parking up at a waterhole for lunch and let the animals come to you.

Day 24
Travel to Blydepoort (105 miles) – make a side trip to the Three Rondawels.

Day 25
A short drive to Sabie (83 miles) but with plenty to see on the way. Visit Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God’s Window, the Graskop waterfalls and the Sudwala Caves.

Day 26
Drive to Pretoria via the Long Tom Pass, famous for battles between the Boers and the British (220 miles). Tonight we will have an evening farewell meal. Overnight Pretoria campsite.
Day 27
Travel to Johannesburg, return motorhomes
This is where we do our own thing for a week:

  • 2 nights in Johannesburg
  • Fly to Durban and relax in a beachfront hotel for four days
  • Back to Johannesburg to meet up with fellow Southern Africa Tour adventurers

Day 1 - 2
Transfer to the motorhome depot to pick up your vehicle and drive to the first campsite. (47 miles). Overnight Pretoria campsite.
Day 3
Travel to Sabie (230 miles) through the Long Tom Pass, famous for battles between the Boers and the British. Visit the waterfalls at Graskop or Sabie or explore the Sudwala caves. Overnight Sabie campsite.
Day 4
Travel north to Blydepoort (97 miles) – plenty of time to explore the Blyde River Canyon and admire the Three Rondavels. Make a detour to see Bourke’s Luck Potholes. Overnight Blyde River campsite.
Day 5 - 7
On to the Kruger National Park (134 miles) world famous for its diverse wildlife including the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo), where we will overnight at three different campgrounds with leisurely drives in between. Take your time and park up at one of the many watering holes for your lunch and let the wildlife come to you. Overnight Three Kruger Park campsites.
Day 8 - 9
Head out of Kruger (219 miles) and then head into Botswana (189 miles) via the Mapungubwe National Park. Overnight Tshipsieand Martin’s Drift campsites.
Day 10 - 11
Heading north through Botswana, we stop at Francistown (179 miles), Botswana’s second city and Nata (115 miles), famous for its birdlife. Overnight Francistown and Nata campsites.
Day 12 - 13
Two nights in Chobe National Park (189 miles), with one of the largest game concentrations in Africa. Included is a game drive to view the animals. Overnight Kasane campsite.
Day 14
Today we will travel by coach to see the spectacular Victoria Falls and spend the night in a lodge in Zimbabwe. Overnight Victoria Falls Lodge Hotel.
Day 15
Leave the lodge in Zimbabwe and return back to your motorhome in Kasane. Overnight Kasane campsite.
Day 16 - 18
Travel though the Caprivi Strip in Namibia calling in at Katima Mililo (138 miles), Mahangu (213 miles) and Grootfontein (262 miles). Included is a sunset boat trip in Mahangu. Overnight Katima Mililo, Mahangu and Grootfontein campsites.
Day 19 - 22
We spend the next three days travelling though Etosha National Park, noted for elephant, zebra, lion and springbok (263 miles). Overnight Namutoni, Halali and Etosha campsites.
Day 23
Explore Damaraland as we travel to Uis (72 miles). Visit Twyfelfontein with its ancient rock art. Overnight Uis campsite.
Day 24 - 26
Time to catch your breath by the seaside with a three night stay in Swakopmund (116 miles), the second largest town in Namibia. Included is a dolphin cruise where you will see dolphins and pelicans. Overnight Swakopmund campsite.
Day 27
Back into the desert into Namib Naukluft Park (178 miles) – where you’ll spend the night in Solitaire. Overnight Solitaire campsite.
Day 28 - 29
Two short drives (50 miles and 68 miles) but with fantastic scenery as we travel to Sesriem – near to the world-famous Sossusvlei dunes and Sesriem Canyon. Head out of the desert to Betta. Overnight Sesriem and Betta campsites.
Day 30
Head out of the National Park to Aus (133 miles). Overnight Aus campsite.
Day 31 - 32
Head to the magnificent Fish River Canyon (190 miles). 100 miles long and up to 550 metres deep, it is Africa’s answer to the Grand Canyon. Overnight Ai-Ais campsite.
Day 33
Leave Namibia and enter South Africa’s West coast and head for Springbok (150 miles) Overnight Springbok campsite.
Day 34
Continue south through the heart of Namaqualand to Citrusdal (242 miles), famous for its citrus fruit. Overnight Citrusdal campsite.
Day 35
Follow the road to Melkbosstrand (188 miles) and admire the views out to sea. Keep an eye out for whales and dolphins along the coast. Overnight Melkbosstrand campsite.
Day 36
Full day guided coach excursion to Cape Town including the summit of Table Mountain (weather permitting), the Castle of Good Hope, the Grootte Kerk, St George’s Cathedral and Greenmarket Square. Evening farewell meal overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and spectacular views of Table Mountain. Overnight Melkbosstrand campsite.
Day 37
Travel to Cape Town, return motorhomes and transfer to airport. Return flight to London. Flight time 11 hours.
Day 38
Arrive London. This ends the tour travel arrangements
